Sunday marks 65th anniversary of Ernie Pyle's death

Ernie Pyle, America’s most famous World War II correspondent and former IDS editor-in-chief, died 65 years ago Sunday on the tiny island of Ie Shima, off the coast of Okinawa in the Pacific.

Pyle served as IDS editor-in-chief in fall 1922. His desk currently rests in the IDS newsroom, and its front drawer is signed by every IDS editor-in-chief after his or her term is finished.

The IDS newsroom is located on the first floor of Ernie Pyle Hall, which also houses the IU School of Journalism.

Read about Pyle’s life and legacy on the IU School of Journalism's Ernie Pyle website.
