Six students at the Maurer School of Law were named Milton Stewart Fellows and will travel to India for internships this summer.
The fellowships are in the school’s Center on the Global Legal Profession and aim to immerse students in global markets that are centered on commerce, politics and social change.
Jayanth Krishnan, professor and head of the India Initiative at the Center on the Global Legal Profession, said the program supports the law school’s commitment to being a leader for an American legal education.
“The program is in keeping with the center’s mission of developing our students’ ability to practice in the globalized legal environment as business lawyers, public servants and social change agents,” Krishnan said in a press release.
The fellows, who will be second-year law students in fall 2010, will spend most of the summer in New Delhi. They will gain experience in multiple settings from law firms to rights-based, non-government organizations to the Indian Solicitor General’s Office.
Professor and director of the Center on the Global Legal Profession William Henderson said exposure to India’s systems and culture will expand their opportunities in the job market.
The internships were funded in five months by alumni, foundations and law firms. Alumnus Milt Stewart, who the fellows are named for, donated to the internships and will also travel to India with the students.
