NYT’s Friedman to highlight 2nd annual COAS themester

The College of Arts and Sciences announced that its second annual themester will explore the concept of sustainability and will include a visit from author and Pulitzer Prize-winner Thomas Friedman in November.

“Sustain•ability: Thriving on a Small Planet,” aims to increase the University’s role in sustainability and give students and faculty an opportunity to create sustainable communities.

The fall 2010 themester will begin Sept. 10 in Dunn Meadow with an opening festival.
Author of “The World is Flat” and “Hot, Flat and Crowded,” Thomas Friedman, a New York Times journalist, will headline the themester and speak Nov. 4 at the IU Auditorium.

There will be additional events, plays, speakers and activities that all relate to the topic of sustainability. The event includes more than 200 courses and encourages research and discussion.

In addition to working with different academic and administrative units on campus, the themester will partner with the IU Office of Sustainability.

Bloomington’s Cardinal Stage Company will also be a part of the themester with its September production of “The Grapes of Wrath,” adapted by Frank Galati.

A faculty committee within the College of Arts and Sciences organizes the themester.
