King is second to none

kaki

Kaki King, or Katherine King, is a talented guitarist from Atlanta and her newest album “Junior” solidifies her status as the only female to receive the title of “Rock God” from Rolling Stone.

Although the genre listed on this review is rock, there is a unique blend of different genres that seem to comprise the overall sound. King lists her genres as shoegaze/experimental/indie, which come a lot closer to describing her sound than just rock.

There are many experimental aspects about “Junior” that give it a strange flavor. Besides focusing solely on her famed guitar skills, there is a greater emphasis on musicianship and song structure.

The extremely heavy reverb on her vocals is often paired with very ambient electronic sounds, which throw off the melodic guitar work and give the songs an eerie tone. Multi-track harmonies for a chorus seem to be a specialty of King and she executes it with great skill here, which adds a dreamy angelic quality to this already compelling and interesting album.
