Howie Yu no longer IU student

IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed that as of Thursday, Hai “Howie” Yu, 19, is no longer an IU student.

He said that according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, he could not discuss the University’s discipline process.

Yu, a former IU-Bloomington sophomore, faces two counts of rape, class B felonies, and one of criminal confinement, a class D felony, for an alleged sexual assault at Foster Magee residence hall March 11. His pretrial conference is scheduled for April 29.

On March 26, Yu’s bond form was filed and according to the Chronological Case Summary, “Liberty Ventures Bail Bonds and Lexington National Insurance post Power of Attorney in the amount of $50,000.00 on 3/25/10.”

Yu is no longer living at Foster but must stay in Monroe County until the outcome of the case, according to the Herald-Times.

IU Police Department officers arrested Yu on March 12 at the Indianapolis International Airport and escorted him to the Monroe County Jail.

Judge Kenneth Todd reduced Yu’s bond from $250,000 surety and $1,000 cash to $50,000 surety on March 22 with the condition that, when released, Yu is placed on home detention with GPS monitoring.

IUPD officers found an unconscious, partially clothed female on the north side of Foster at 3:27 a.m. March 11. She was transported and admitted to Bloomington Hospital, according to an IUPD press release.

The IUPD probable cause affidavit said the woman, an IU student, had multiple bruises and a spleen injury and a sexual assault examination indicated rape. She could not provide the location or identity of the suspect.

IUPD investigative Sgt. Leslie Slone said she interviewed Yu and his account of the evening contradicted campus video surveillance systems, according to the affidavit.
Yu was the Foster Residence Center representative to the 2009-10 IU Student Association Congress.
