Greeks create weekend events for philanthropies

Cardiac Arrest
Little 500 pair Alpha Phi and Phi Gamma Delta said they believe the famous event is about more than just the race.

The two greek organizations have teamed together to throw Cardiac Arrest from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday. Members of their houses will “arrest” other chapter presidents and executive members who will then be “bailed out” for $100.

During the bailouts, there will be a cookout at Alpha Phi. The cost is $3, and all the proceeds will go to Riley Hospital for Children.

“Little Five can be a platform to engage in other activities,” Fiji president and junior Ted Boeglin said. “We’re really glad to be paired with Alpha Phi and do something for the community at large.”

Flapjack Attack
The women of Delta Delta Delta will spend their weekend flipping pancakes at their philanthropic event, Flapjack Attack.

Pancake breakfasts, complete with sausage and orange juice, will be served from midnight to 3 a.m. Sunday to all who buy tickets. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 during the event.

Flapjack is the sorority’s biggest philanthropic event and raised $9,000 last year. Philanthropy chairwoman and junior April Dhamalongkrot said they hope to raise between $10,000 and $12,000 this year.

“It’s great to see the whole entire house come together and work for one cause,” Dhamalongkrot said. “Flapjack is something we really look forward to and something we hope the rest of IU and Bloomington look forward to, too.”

All proceeds benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Shamrock 5k Run
Kappa Delta sorority’s fourth Shamrock 5K Run will take off at 10 a.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium.

Registration is at the sorority house, online at tinyurl.com/KDshamrock and at the race. It is $10 before the event and $12 starting 9 a.m. Sunday.

The sorority is also having a spaghetti dinner 7 p.m. Saturday at their house that is free to registered runners and is also sponsoring a costume contest and providing a DJ during the run.

“The run brings everyone out for a really good cause,” said junior and Shamrock chairwoman Jill Casamo . “And it’s a great way to celebrate spring.”

All proceeds will benefit Prevent Child Abuse America, Kappa Delta’s national philanthropic cause.

Anchor Slam
Forty-four 3-on-3 basketball teams will take the court 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday  at Briscoe Quad’s basketball courts for Delta Gamma’s annual Anchor Slam.

Though Service for Sight is DG’s national philanthropy, the women are raising money for a lectureship on ethics, morals and values at IU. DG won a grant for a guest speaker and will use the event’s proceeds for the rest of the cost.

Registration is now closed, and the women exceeded their goal of $1,000.

“It’s exciting to be bringing this lectureship to Bloomington,” Anchor Slam chairwoman and junior Abby Lower said, “since it will be free to everyone in the community so we’ll be able to bring everyone together.”

Taste of IU
Chi Omega will sponsor the second annual Taste of IU from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday  at its house with samples from 16 Bloomington restaurants for $7 per ticket.

Vendors include Malibu Grill, Aver’s Pizza and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. Chi O’s philanthropy is the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and all the proceeds will send a 2-year-old Bloomington girl and her family to Disney World.

Philanthropy chairwoman and junior Liza Giambra, who is also an IDS advertising staff member, said the sorority tried to find diverse restaurants to offer attendees a wide sampling of food and an authentic representation of what Bloomington offers.
“It’s been especially exciting getting to talk to all the local business owners,” Giambra said.
