The international symposium and film festival “Making History ReVisible: East German Cinema after Unification” runs from today until Sunday.
The festival will include panels and films that illustrate the development of East German cinema after the fall of the Berlin Wall as well as integrating the past with the future through politics, education and industry practices.
All the film screenings are free and have English subtitles and will in the School of Fine Arts.
Events begin with a reception 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Faculty Club at the Indiana Memorial Union.
Three German films will have their U.S. premiere in Bloomington. Wolfgang
Kohlhaase, the recipient of the Berlin Film Festival’s 2010 Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement, will also be at the festival.
The festival is the finale of the IU DEFA Project: Remembering 1989-90 through East German Films of the Transition that began in January.
The featured films are the last films of the East German DEFA Film Studios made in the time after the Cold War, and the series has attracted audiences between 100 to 200 people for each screening.
Advance tickets are suggested and can be obtained by sending an e-mail to jamastee@umail.iu.edu. A complete schedule for the festival can be found online at tinyurl.com/2bx85pd.
