When people think of men’s and women’s fashion they probably think of completely opposite things. Clothes are traditionally supposed to express strong, masculine qualities for men and soft, feminine qualities for women.
But fashion, now more than ever, is throwing out the old way of thinking and showcasing a new “unisex” feel. Whether it is an item of clothing or a certain style, no longer can all clothes be labeled just for men or just for women.
The cardigan
The cardigan has been around for ages, but some people may think of their grandpa when they think of it. In the past few years though, the cardigan has been breaking boundaries on fashion and becoming an iconic unisex piece.
Although most men and women won’t be borrowing the button-up sweater from each other, this item has been stylized to fit many types of girls and guys. From preppy to punk, formal to everyday attire, there is a cardigan for everyone.
The suit & scarf
In the days of “Mad Men,” when business was a man’s world and women were stuck answering phones and getting coffee, there was no need for the business suit to be styled for anyone but a man.
In today’s business world, women are no longer stuck behind the desk and are in need of their own power wear. Whether with a skirt or a classic pant, women are adding a feminine touch to this once male-only apparel, while still being able to maintain the authority of a business leader.
In the past, men’s fashion was always translated into a softer look for women. Never did women’s styles jump into the masculine pool.
That era has changed, and styles and trends that used to be found in only in women’s wear are popping up in men’s collections around the world.
Winter scarves have always been worn by men, but when lighter scarves took over women’s looks, it wasn’t long before guys were stylizing their wardrobe with the pieces of fabric.
When comparing scarves designed for men and women, there are major differences between prints and colors, but the fundamental style is present in both.
There is not much difference in how you decide to wear a scarf. Any way can be pulled off by a girl or guy.
Meggings?
Even the girliest of trends have been seen sneaking over the gender border. Leggings, the latest trendy item for girls, have been released in a new masculine look.
Although “meggings” have not caught on as much as women’s leggings so far, these skin-tight fashion statements can still be seen on macho guys. “Meggings” have been made into more of a pant than their female counterparts, but there is no mistaking them for a pair of jeans.
Fashion has always been an art form that has pushed boundaries and dared to be different. It has gone against traditional social gender roles and redefined what we see as feminine and masculine.
So don’t be afraid to try something different and go against the grain, even if you are going to strut a pair of “meggings.”
