American Academy of Arts and Sciences honors 2 IU professors

Music Professor Jaime Laredo and Professor Emeritus of informatics J. Michael Dunn were two of the 229 leaders in science, social science, humanities, arts, business and public affairs to be elected members of the 2010 Class of Fellows and Foreign Honorary Members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“The men and women we elect today are true path breakers who have made unique contributions to their fields and to the world,” said Academy Chairman Louis Cabot in an IU press release.

Dunn was the founding dean of the School of Informatics.

“The school and many of the people in it are here today due to Mike’s vision ... so to have the school’s founding dean named to this elite body of world leaders in the arts and sciences is something we take great pride in,” said Bobby Schnabel,  dean of the School of Informatics, in the release.

Laredo is the Jacobs School of Music’s Linda and Jack Gill Chair in Violin and a Grammy winning violinist. He spent more than 40 years as a solo violinist, conductor, recitalist and chamber musician.

“Beloved in the musical realm, it is exciting and befitting now to see him named by one of the world’s most prestigious honorary societies in the company of other revered scholars, scientists, writers, artists and philanthropic leaders,” Jacobs Dean Gwyn Richards said in the press release.

Both will be inducted to the academy with their class of fellows and foreign honorary members on Oct. 9 at the Academy’s headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
