Autechre’s new album “Oversteps” starts off quiet like the wind and evolves into a swirling storm of strange electronic sound and ambient keyboards. Having been together for more than 20 years, this type of eclectic and strangely creative album is expected.
The meat of “Oversteps” features harsh electronica synths with suave yet dark and eerie echoes that give the album a very haunting tone. It contains some of the most unreal sounds that come together to create a swirling mess. The many layers of this album create its uniquely wide, deep and spacey sound.
A few tracks highlight Autechre’s earlier nature, containing hard dance beats that belong in a sweaty English nightclub.
The lack of a clear melody or common thread throughout the album makes the listener focus closely on every note and aspect of the album instead of just the most mainstream or common parts.
The eeriness of this album is a little unnerving, but the beauty behind this intelligent and complex style is captivating.
