The world’s largest car-sharing service is coming to IU’s campus. Transportation Services announced via a press release Wednesday its partnership with Zipcar, a service that allows people to rent small cars by the hour.
Students, faculty and staff will be able to rent them for $8 an hour after a $35 fee.
The new service will improve parking congestion, along with giving students an alternative to owning a car.
It is the first car-sharing program in the state, according to the release.
Zipcars will be available for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning on Tuesday. Faculty, staff and students ages 18 and older are allowed to use the cars. Local residents ages 21 and older are also allowed to use the car, but for a higher joining price.
“Car sharing is just another transportation-demand management tool that we use to provide convenient and quality transportation service to campus,” Kent McDaniel, executive director of Transportation Services, said in the release. “We want to create an environment at IU where parents can send their children knowing that we have the best public transit system in Indiana, with the combined efforts of Campus Bus and Bloomington Transit, for daily commuting needs, and we also offer them Zipcar for their infrequent and less predictable needs.”
