Remember all the hype about gas prices? It’s kind of fallen off the national radar, but Indiana still ranks near the top of state gasoline taxes. Below are five interesting facts.
1. Indiana has the 11th highest tax on gasoline at 50.1 cents per gallon.
2. One barrel of crude oil makes more than just car fuel. Automobile gasoline takes up 46 percent of the barrel, but the rest is saved for home heating, asphalt, lubricants and kerosene, among other things.
3. Compared to the national average of $2.62 per gallon, Indiana’s current cost per gallon of gasoline is $2.49.
4. The United States imports half of its required crude oil, and half of that comes from OPEC countries.
5. Hawaii and Alaska claim the highest gas prices, while Missouri and Oklahoma have the lowest.
