‘Open mic' at cafe for poetry, prose and song

People use their voices to express love, hate, sadness, fear and everything in-between.

All genres of poetry will be welcome at the Hart Rock Poetry Series open-mic night Friday at Rachael’s Cafe.

Every fourth Friday during the month, Hart Rock hosts an event that usually features different performers, followed by an open-mic portion.

Coleman said this month’s poetry series will be strictly open mic.

While people primarily read poetry, Coleman said anything from prose to songs are also welcome.

“We definitely like to have the voice expressed,” she said, adding that subject matter varies widely. “It’s whatever they’re in love with.”

Rachael’s Cafe owner Rachael Jones said there will be plenty of delicious treats for sale during the evening, and many of the items are vegan or vegetarian.

“We will have at least one soup ... anything from coconut curry to ginger pea,” Jones said.

The cafe also has lots of  desserts, drinks and entrees.

Events like the poetry reading are common at the cafe and fit the atmosphere, the cafe’s booking agent, Emily Brown said.

“Matrix Poetry also meets here monthly,” she said. “Women Inspire has talks and lunches.”

Brown said that other groups include belly-dancing troupes and political groups.
“Rachael’s is definitely the cultural hodgepodge,” Brown said. “It’s an inclusive and welcoming place to hold events.”

Jones said she enjoys providing a venue for people to express themselves.

“So many people have so many talents that I just like to offer a place for that to be, you know, shared,” she said. “It brings a richness, I think.”
