Opening for only a few months every three years, masterpieces made by faculty from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts are now on display in the Triennial 2010 exhibit.
Art critic James Yood lectured before the reception, where he discussed the role that location plays in sparking artistic vision.
“I think it is an important time to recognize what it means to be a visual artist in the Midwest,” Yood said. “Where you live is one of the most important choices you make as an artist second to your spouse. Once you make the decision, it molds you.”
Bloomington resident Wendy Bernstein said it was refreshing to hear Yood speak.
“Where you are is important to your daily life, but it doesn’t limit your perspective,” Bernstein said. “Bloomington is so culturally rich, it is just not as overwhelming as New York.”
Sophomores Julia Denison and Marine Tempels, both studio art majors with concentrations in painting, said they were curious to see their professors’ artwork.
“I feel like they always have helpful things to say about our own work, so now we can see if they put that in their work as well,” Denison said.
Tempels said it was inspirational to see the artwork on display.
“I want to be a professional painter, so I would definitely like to be here one day,” Tempels said.
In his first year at IU, Chris Barnard, visiting assistant professor of painting, had his oil-on-canvas painting, “Staking Claims,” hung in the gallery.
Bernard said he loves being at a school with a strong art and painting program.
“I did not want to be the new guy with the big painting, but it feels great to be a part of the faculty show,” Barnard said. “I am excited to see if there are interesting connections between the work.”
The Triennial celebration includes Noon Talks, Art-side Chats and more. Barnard will discuss the role of painting in today’s art world from 3 to 4 p.m. Feb. 5.
“There is a lot going on here, painters, sculptors, a Tibetan tribute,” Bernstein said. “You need to check it all out.”
