IU junior Phi Psi member dies at Smallwood Plaza

IU junior Jonathan Herz died Dec. 17 after fatally injuring himself, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Jeff Canada said.

The incident happened at Smallwood Plaza, 455 N. College Ave., and is still pending investigation, Canada said, because police found drugs located in the residence.

Herz was from Wilmette, Ill., and a graduate of New Trier High School, according to his Chicago Tribune obituary.

The 20-year-old was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

“He was one of the nicest people I ever met in my life,” said IU junior and Phi Kappa Psi president Chris Held. “He was always into pleasing others before pleasing himself. I think that’s the general consensus in our house.”

Although Herz lived at Smallwood Plaza, Held said he came to the fraternity almost every day because he loved the opportunity to talk and be around others.

“He was very inquisitive, always wanted to know more,” Held said. “He was a very refreshing individual. A lot of people are very wrapped in their own minds, but Jon wasn’t.”
