INDIANAPOLIS – The observation deck of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis has reopened after two months of repair work.
The top level of the 284-foot-tall landmark reopened during the weekend. The monument was closed in mid-September so that crews could fix damage caused by rain leaking into the observation deck.
Officials said about $450,000 in work was needed, including repairs to the steel supports for the observation deck and the Lady Victory statue. Crews also installed new vertical windows to prevent the water leaks from the previous slanted windows at the 107-year-old monument.
Visitor Molly Ott said she loved the new observation deck and its views of the city.
Officials plan to remove the Lady Victory statue next summer so it can be re-bronzed.
