After five years of trying to unite the campus, one sorority received recognition for their efforts. Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. raked in four awards from their national organization for its work spreading multiculturalism on IU’s campus.
“They have been working on really substantive education programs that are really transforming the campus climate,” Theta Nu Xi faculty adviser Eric Love said. “They subscribe to diversity and multiculturalism, and they mean it.”
The sorority has been winning different campus awards over the past few years, but
this is the first time the chapter has been nationally recognized, Love said.
The group received awards for faculty and chapter adviser contributions and also won Chapter of the Year and Program of the Year.
“Our chapter has always had a history of working hard on campus, and people are starting to realize this,” junior Jasmine Collins, president of Theta Nu Xi, said.
The program that prompted national recognition was the Take ONE Multicultural Talent
Competition and Emergence, which the group has been putting on for three years.
Collins said the talent show became the biggest event the chapter has ever organized,
with more than 300 students, faculty members and Bloomington locals in attendance.
The show was designed to highlight multicultural talent across campus, Collins said.
“Our acts were really multicultural from gospel singing to break dancing to performing Spanish dialogues,” Collins said.
Theta Nu Xi partnered with Delta Tau Delta, an Interfraternity Council group, as well as the campus chapter of NAACP to put on the talent show.
The sorority prides itself on collaborative efforts with various student groups on campus to promote acceptance and unity. The talent show is just one example of this.
“They have been collaborating with different groups, specifically those in the four different greek councils, for years,” Love said. “Now other groups are starting to follow suit.”
