Panel asks: Is chivalry dead?

A panel discussion questioned “Is Chivalry Dead, or Has Feminism Killed It?” Thursday in the Herman B Wells Library, and many opinions made for a lively discussion.

The event was part of Sigma Lambda Gamma’s  “Distinct in Pink” week of events, and was co-sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Eta Chapter, Women of Color Leadership Institute, the Office for Women’s Affairs and Savant peer educators.

Though there was a four-person discussion panel and two moderators, most of the conversation was among the audience.

The discussion began with the meaning of “chivalry,” which led to many saying they thought that the word had changed but the idea continued.

Much of the discussion centered around women’s expectations, specifically concerning introductions and who should pay the bill on dates.

The media’s depiction of modern chivalry and feminism was another primary topic. After viewing Fabolous’ music video for “Throw It In The Bag,” the audience discussed the idea of “buying” women.

“If you want to be treated equally, it should go both ways,” senior Fabiene Boone said.
