Hoosiers stun No. 7 Louisville 2-0 in NCAA opener

soccer

Senior forward Darren Yeagle scored once with his head and once with his foot Thursday to take down No. 7 Louisville 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament’s opening round.

The Hoosiers fell to the Cardinals 4-0 Oct.21 in the team’s worst showing of the regular season, but were able to turn the tables with gritty defense and the ability to take advantage of rare scoring opportunities.

Louisville posted 13 shots Thursday, but freshman keeper Luis Soffner kept the favored Cardinals out of the net by chalking up two saves, one of which was a one-on-one opportunity against Kenny Walker in the first half.

It was IU’s third win against a ranked opponent.

Four yellow cards were given in the game, three of which were against Louisville for hard fouls, the fourth against Yeagle for delay of game.

The Hoosiers now face Butler at 2 p.m  Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Bulldogs defeated IU 2-1 in double-overtime Oct. 7. Butler had a first-round bye.
