'Mad Men' recap: With August (and life) beating them down, Pete and Betty play pretend

With the August doldrums wearing down a few characters who are both bored and disappointed with their lives, they decide to take it upon themselves to make things interesting. But as Pete, Betty and Joan discover, improving your life isn’t so easy — especially when you cannot escape it. August is an agreed-upon vacation period for many at Sterling Cooper, but Pete finds himself bored at work and alone at home with Trudy chilling with her family up the coast.  Being the big man-child that he is, Pete goes overboard with both very adult things — drinking too much — and very childish things — eating cereal in his underwear on the couch — but his boredom subsides when he finds a neighbor’s au pair in trouble.
