Q & A: Folklore librarian discusses human love of fear

Moira Smith, IU librarian for anthropology, folklore, sociology and social work, is submersed in the myths, legends and tales that have become a part of American history. Here Smith explains why people have become so fascinated with being scared.

IDS: Why are people drawn to ghost stories and legends?

MS: There is a variety of reasons. The biggest one is our fear of death. We know we are mortal, but we don’t like it. Ghosts are our version of some form of life after death, which is both desired and feared. The attraction is from the thought that we are not completely dead, but at the same time we fear it. Ghosts, though, are usually depicted as restless. We have the expression “rest in peace.” Ghosts are the ones who have unfinished business or died a tragic death or did something wrong in life.

IDS: Why do people tell ghost stories?

MS: It’s our way to explore the whole belief in ghosts. But belief can be anything from skepticism to truly believing. The area of belief in ghosts is a gray area, and that drives people to explore.

IDS: What are the recurring themes of a ghost story?

MS: It’s usually something significant. A man goes to war and dies, but his wife doesn’t know he is dead. He comes to her at night and either says goodbye or tries to take her with him. Many deal with dead loved ones or relatives. There are also many victims of murder who return to inflict punishment or reveal their murder. Then there is the usual wandering ghost that haunts a location, and nobody knows why they can’t rest.

IDS: Are all ghosts evil?

MS: There is a mix of types. Usually ghosts are sad or malevolent. You don’t see too many happy ghosts.

IDS: Why do people use ghost stories to be scared?

MS: There are all kinds of reasons. It’s almost like going on a roller coaster. When you see a scary movie or listen to a ghost story, it’s something scary, but it’s under control. You can abandon yourself to fear but you know it will end. It’s a thrill.
