Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT were on the scene Tuesday morning near the IUPUI campus responding to a disturbance call around 4 a.m. about an armed man in his apartment.
Police negotiated with a 24-year-old Iraq war veteran who was armed with a rifle in the Lockefield Gardens apartments, police spokesman Sgt. Paul Thompson said.
Police found patio furniture that had been thrown, broken glass and traces of blood.
“When officers got there they followed the trail of blood” to the suspect’s apartment, Thompson said.
Police saw the suspect struggling with his roommate, but eventually came out unharmed about 15 minutes later, Thompson said.
Nearby residents in the apartment complex were evacuated and IUPUI officials said the incident would not affect any classes.
