Search team looks for new IUN chancellor

A committee hopes to find a new chancellor of IU Northwest in Gary in time for the 2010-11 school year.

Bruce Bergland, the current chancellor, is retiring after more than 10 years of running IU Northwest. The search committee will recommend an applicant to IU President Michael McRobbie.

Official policy states that the chancellor is the chief executive officer of the campus.
Bergland is responsible for all campus operations and reports to IU’s president.
On Sept. 16, McRobbie announced the formation of the committee to conduct a nationwide search for the best possible candidate, which IU Vice President for Diversity,
Equity and Multicultural Affairs Edwin Marshall chairs.

Marshall said both the search and screen process will be completely transparent.

The 13 committee members represent different campus and community groups. Members include professors, professional staff, an IU Northwest student and the director of the Gary Chamber of Commerce.

The University is using executive search firm Witt/Kieffer to facilitate the screening. The firm is consulted by companies, health care providers, higher education and non-profit organizations. Interested applicants should contact the firm.

The search committee does not have a set timetable, but they hope to complete the search by spring so the new chancellor can start his or her work in Gary by the start of the 2010-11 academic year.
