Meh.
That about sums up Shane Acker’s new CGI adventure film, “9.” Lots of pretty images, but ultimately no point.
“9” is the story of nine tiny ragdoll creatures created by a scientist to continue humanity’s legacy in the post-apocalyptic world they inhabit.
They are each named for the order in which they were created, and 9 (Elijah Wood) – the last of the series – is determined to solve the mystery of their existence.
The mystery itself isn’t very clever, and feels fairly obvious to anyone paying attention at the beginning.
Even the final clue, “Go back to the first room,” just drives home the pointlessness of the plot: Everything we wanted to know was right there from the start, and the rest of the plot is just misdirection.
The visuals are spectacular, but the story can’t back them up.
“9” is adapted from a short film director Shane Acker made in 2005, and it feels like there wasn’t enough plot to fill a longer film.
Poor plot is only ‘9’ mystery worth investigating
