IU recycles 14 tons of boxes after move-in day

IU students brought tons of boxes with them as they moved into dormitories, leaving the university with 14 tons of cardboard that it collected and recycled.

IU Residential Programs & Services staff members and student volunteers worked to collect boxes in large bins stationed near the university's 11 residence halls.

The recycling program began after 2008 discussions with the university's Office of Sustainability, which works on environmental and energy issues. Indiana University collected 12 tons of cardboard for recycling last year.

In years before the program began, tons of cardboard from move-in day were dumped into an area landfill.
