Bloomington takes steps to combat graffiti

Bloomington officials are taking steps to crack down on graffiti problems.

The city expects to launch a new Web site soon so business owners and residents can report graffiti. City officials and police will use the reports to identify trends and areas that are affected most.

Site visitors also will be able to post pictures of the graffiti to help police compare incidents.

City Councilman Timothy Mayer said graffiti removal costs the city’s Parks and Recreation Department $5,000 to $10,000 a year, almost equal to the city’s costs.

The city also is setting up a task force to find other solutions, which could include requiring graffiti vandals to help clean up or paint over their work as part of community service.
