Say “No More”

We are inching closer and closer to eliminating the freedom to succeed in the United States.

Since former President Bush’s paradigm shift toward government overhaul and expansionism in our financial system last fall, Americans trust their government more than they trust themselves.

As former President Ronald Reagan once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’” Government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem.

When we eliminate the freedom to fail in this country, we eliminate the freedom to succeed. This is exactly what the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the recent omnibus spending bill have done.
It is true in life that we learn best from our failures. When we fail, we learn from our mistakes, pick ourselves up again and make another concerted effort.

We are not allowing the principle of a free market economy to occur nor are we allowing Adam Smith’s timeless principle of the invisible hand to invisibly shape our economy. We are eliminating the freedom to fail. We are eliminating the freedom to succeed.

When President Obama stepped into office, there was great excitement among many people. But for many others, there was great anxiety stirring within us.

That anxiety has not subsided. Just 28 days after entering office, President Obama signed one of the largest, most expensive pieces of legislation in world history with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Many others like myself are absolutely outraged and fear the new thinking that Americans have adopted. You should be outraged, too. We are spending money not only at exorbitant amounts, but spending money that hasn’t even been made.

This has serious implications for our future. Representatives and senators are voting on pieces of legislation that, essentially, don’t affect them. Our generation and our children’s generation will be reaping the burden of these massively expensive bills. Ladies and gentlemen, we must stop this now!

We can no longer afford to tolerate Washington’s blatant, unethical disregard for the future of this country. You know you felt a one-two punch in your gut when that stimulus bill was signed.

One, asking yourself: Is this right? And two: How are we going to pay for this? Republicans and Democrats are to blame for this newfound, unethical, fiscally irresponsible thinking.

Therefore, I ask you today, to protest with the College Republicans between Ballantine and Woodburn halls from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at our “Bailout Booth” – to represent the one too many bailouts our government has given.

Bloomington will host a Tea Party tonight at the Showers Building from 5 to 7 p.m. representing the over-taxation of the American government and symbolizing the Boston Tea Party’s iconic resistance.

Ladies and gentlemen, your future is at stake here. You have a vital interest in securing the economic prosperity of this country; that prosperity is slipping and slipping from our hands. Our country as we know it may never be the same. So, it is time to say, “No more!” No more bailouts, no more deficits, no more spending!
