The IU Student Association Supreme Court has certified that the Btown ticket will be the next administration to take office.
The Court certified Monday that the Btown ticket won the majority of the 7,742 ballots cast in this year’s election.
The IUSA Supreme Court must certify the election results to make sure there are no inaccuracies, said senior Tara Maloney, Supreme Court chief justice.
In this year’s election, there were no complaints filed about the individual tickets, Maloney said.
“The elections ran smoothly, compared to the debacle of last year,” she said.
Btown executives are excited to begin their term of office for the 2009-10 school year beginning April 15.
“We are excited as the Btown ticket to do our best to represent the student body,” said junior Peter SerVaas, IUSA president-elect.
Although Btown won the election, they were still fined for not complying with Section 603: Financial Statements of the elections code by the IUSA elections commission.
After appealing to the IUSA Supreme Court, Btown had a hearing on Thursday in front of the elections commission. The commission decided to issue a financial penalty of 2.5 percent of their total campaign expenditures, resulting in $106.47.
Section 603 of the elections code states, “An affidavit shall consist of an itemized list of all contributions and their respective signatures.” The Btown ticket’s financial statement did not contain the signatures necessary.
The only reason Btown was fined was due to a miscommunication, SerVaas said.
After senior Elizabeth Retana, IUSA elections coordinator, informed Btown executives that she needed signatures, the members of the Btown ticket got them within the next two days.
“We were disappointed with the result because the necessary information was produced within 48 hours,” SerVaas said.
