Young Democrats sets goals at initial meeting

Bloomington High School South freshmen Maggie Christ and Colin Diersing sign postcards to send to Congress at a Young Democrats of Monroe County meeting Monday evening at the Village Deli. The Young Democrats talked about future fundraising, writing letters to Congressmen, and starting high school and college groups.

Young Democrats of Monroe County had its first monthly meeting Monday at The Village Deli.

The organization’s first meeting focused on plans for fundraising. The Young Democrats plan to meet with a local attorney to discuss regulations for a fundraising pact in addition to events and small donor campaigns.

Colin Diersing, a senior at Bloomington High School South, serves as president of the organization. Diersing stressed the importance of fundraising and encouraged members to explore ideas.

“We have zero dollars right now, but we are looking at different opportunities to get funds,” Diersing said.

Young Democrats encourages membership from college and high school students to young professionals and community members of Monroe County under the age of 36.

Jackie Conley, a junior at Bloomington High School South, serves as vice president of the organization. Conley outlined the group’s two-year plan to target young community members.

“We are reaching out to young people through different caucuses. Members will have the opportunity to participate in IU and high school caucuses as well as caucuses targeting women and African-Americans in the community,” Conley said.

Meg McGillivray, a senior at Bloomington High School South, was a volunteer for President Barack Obama’s campaign and said she wanted to continue her involvement in Democratic campaigns.

“I’m not sure what’s out there to stay involved,” McGillivray said. “That’s why I’m coming to things like these.”

Kaylie Scherer, an IU freshman majoring in legal studies with a minor in fundraising, was an intern on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign and Obama’s presidential campaign.  She said these opportunities taught her the importance of getting people involved and taking action in a campaign and Democratic policies.

The members of the new organization aspire to continue involving the young community in Democratic elections, but also want to promote the Obama administration’s policies.

“We worked so hard to get Obama elected,” McGillivray said. “Now we need to promote the implementation of his policies.”
