In honor of Founder’s Day and to teach students more about IU traditions and culture, sophomore Christian Hines said he thought of one speaker to provide the knowledge: Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.
The Hutton Honors College will host “A Fireside Chat” with Gros Louis today, open to all IU students.
As a member of the Extracurricular Programming Committee for the honors college, Hines, also an Indiana Daily Student columnist, said he wanted to plan an event to coincide with Founder’s Day, which was Sunday.
He had the idea to invite Gros Louis, who came to IU in 1964, to speak because of his years of experience with the University, especially his interaction with then-president Herman B Wells and his knowledge of the changes IU has seen in becoming one of the nation’s major research universities.
“He’s the best one to talk to us if you want to talk about Herman and tradition,” Hines said.
He also said he wants the event to be a conversation with Gros Louis and not a lecture. After an introduction from Gros Louis, Hines will ask a few planned questions. He will then open the floor to students and give them an opportunity to “pick the brain” of Gros Louis.
“He helped with the growth of IU,” Hines said. “Herman B Wells, Chancellor Gros Louis ... They were the key players in generating the change.”
