John Matthews, 22, of South Bend, was arrested by police Tuesday night at Scotty’s Brewhouse and faces preliminary charges of dealing cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to deal – both Class A felonies – and resisting law enforcement.
Matthews’ preliminary charge of possession of cocaine with intent to deal, a Class B felony, was increased to a Class A felony because he was dealing cocaine in a public housing project, Bloomington Police Department Lt. David Drake said.
Drake said a cocaine investigation against Matthews started in early 2008. Matthews left town before police identified him.
Tuesday night, BPD Detective Jarred Burns saw Matthews enter Scotty’s Brewhouse. Burns and other BPD detectives went in to take him into custody on dealing charges, Drake said, reading from a police report.
He resisted and struggled with police as they handcuffed him.
After Matthews was apprehended, police found 50 individual bags with rocks of crack cocaine in his pocket weighing a total of about 13 grams, Drake said.
Possessing any amount of crack cocaine that is more than three grams is a Class A felony. Matthews also had $1,000 cash.
Matthews admitted to police the crack cocaine was his and said it was all for his personal use.
Later, Burns learned that Matthews was out on bond for drug charges in Hamilton County.
Matthews was taken to the Monroe County jail.
