A tactless, insensitive policy

WE SAY The time for a decision on Wildermuth was years ago.

As much as it pains all of us to continue to discuss the controversy and mismanagement surrounding the renaming of the Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center, we must address the most recent events.

The IU board of trustees determined in its most recent vote that the intramural center would be renamed the William L. Garrett-Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center. Perhaps this would be appropriate – but William Garrett’s widow, in a tactless maneuver, wasn’t even asked for her thoughts about coupling her late husband’s name with Wildermuth’s.

When she found out of the board’s decision, Betty Garrett unequivocally rejected the trustees’ proposition.

So, here we remain, with no name change, no agreement and no organization. We are yet again reminded that if our administration had swiftly and thoughtfully made a definitive decision when the Wildermuth dilemma first arose, we would not be years-deep in discussion without any resolution.
