U.S. should do more for health care

So we finally have a president most of America – indeed, the world – can feel good about. Feeling good healthwise, though, has become a shaky proposition for too many Americans victimized by our hodgepodge, cost-weary health care system.

We are a nation that prides itself on valuing the individual. Still, we are the only industrialized country that doesn’t have some form of universal health care coverage. Most have had it for decades – Germany since 1883. Imagine. The German people kept alive the “we are our brother’s keeper” credo even through the Nazi years.

The prevailing view is that money is the main problem. How about attitude?
Self-preservation is a potent motive. Most Americans are, at least, getting by with their health care coverage. Many, though, are hesitant to buy into a cover-all plan that could cost them something more.

We need to do a conscience check. You say you didn’t feel good bailing out corporate America? We have another chance to feel better. Let’s do whatever it takes to get all Americans under a health care umbrella.
