IU President Michael McRobbie’s son was arrested Saturday after police found him in possession of marijuana, said IU Police Department Capt. Jerry Minger.
Lucien R. McRobbie, an 18-year-old freshman, faces preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, Minger said.
A Wright Quad resident assistant smelled marijuana smoke and contacted IUPD, Minger said.
The police determined that the smell came from Lucien McRobbie’s room. Police received a search warrant to investigate the room and found marijuana, Minger said.
“As for the University, all students who are arrested in Bloomington are referred to the dean of students for a disciplinary hearing,” IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre said.
Lucien McRobbie was not admitted to jail, signing his own release promising to attend his court date, Minger said.
The two preliminary charges, both class A misdemeanors, potentially carry a variety of penalties, ranging from community service to fines up to $5,000 and a one-year jail sentence, Minger said.
The severity of the sentence depends on the charges and the person’s criminal record, Minger said.
MacIntyre said the freshman will be treated just like any other student in his situation.
“The McRobbie family considers it a private matter,” MacIntyre said.
