Indiana guard troops return to new airport

Visitors moving between the parking garages and the terminal are greeted by an overhead display of lights and sound called Interactive Passage at the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal Building on Tuesday at the Indianapolis International Airport. The new terminal received its first arriving passengers later Tuesday.

INDIANAPOLIS – About 100 Indiana National Guard troops returned home after nine months in Iraq by marching through Indianapolis International Airport’s new terminal.

The members of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team arrived at the airport Wednesday morning, the first full day of operation for the new $1 billion terminal.

About 400 family members and friends greeted the soldiers as a military band played.
The soldiers’ flight was originally scheduled to land Tuesday to coincide with a Veterans Day ribbon-cutting ceremony, but their plane was delayed by mechanical problems.

The troops will go to Camp Atterbury for several days of debriefing before returning home.
The 3,200-member Guard unit is scheduled to return in stages through Dec. 7.
