Uncharacteristic losses pile up for women's soccer team

For the second straight weekend, the IU women’s soccer team was unable to find any offense. The Hoosiers (5-8, 0-4) were defeated 1-0 in both of their road games during the weekend at Iowa and Minnesota.

Although the Hoosiers out-shot the Hawkeyes 14-7 in their Friday contest, Iowa’s goal 18:30 into the first half was all the home team needed to get by the Hoosiers.

“For the third straight game we’ve played very well but wound up scoreless and winless,” IU coach Mick Lyon said in a statement. “In this league, you can’t win games hoping the ball goes in the net. It requires skill and composure, and we’re not showing that right now. Playing great and being winless is tough, but at least we are playing well, because that gives me hope.”

IU’s best opportunity to score came from sophomore forward Jocelyn Moses, whose shot rattled the post.

In Sunday’s game, the Hoosiers took on a one-loss Minnesota team, perhaps the surprise of the conference thus far, to the wire, losing in overtime. Despite switching the starting lineup from Friday’s game, the Golden Gophers were still able to edge, winning 1-0 – just as the Hoosiers’ other three Big Ten opponents have this season.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Minnesota’s Lindsey Schwartz scored her sixth goal of the season in the 97th minute to drop the Hoosiers.

IU had two chances in the overtime to get on the board. The first came off the foot of freshman midfielder Devon Beach, whose shot in the 93rd minute sailed wide of the goal. The Hoosiers’ other chance came about a minute later off a corner kick from freshman Kirsta Kellin, which IU was unable to capitalize on.

The unluckiest player in both games was freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell, who totaled three saves during the weekend.

IU will remain on the road this weekend, playing at 8 p.m. EDT on Friday against Wisconsin. It will then play again at 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday against Northwestern.
