WELCOME WEEK HIGHLIGHTS
Wednesday, Aug. 27
• 8 a.m. Residence halls open
• 3 p.m., 5 p.m. Freshman Induction Ceremony (family invited, picnic afterward)
• 7 p.m. Residence hall community meetings (required for freshmen)
• 7 p.m. Optional parent meetings
• 7 p.m. Off-campus freshmen and transfer student meetings
• After floor meetings, in-center social events.
Thursday, Aug. 28
• 3 p.m. Academic orientation meetings
• 4-8 p.m. CultureFest
In-center events as desired, such as tournaments, picnics and other events in the residence hall. “Coffee and Cultures” at the IU Art Museum.
Friday, Aug. 29
• 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. Required University Division student meetings (students will receive letter detailing meeting)
• 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m. Jobs fair for work-study and non-work-study
• Noon-2 p.m. Open houses and receptions – Academic Support areas and culture centers
• 1-3 p.m. RecFest (intramural sports festival)
• 3 p.m. Residence center meetings
• 4:30 p.m. The Traditions and Spirit of IU – Assembly Hall; doors open at 4 p.m. Prizes are given out.
After T&S: Taste of the IMU. Shuttles will be available and free food from Union vendors is provided.
• 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Midnight Madness Late-Night Shopping for last-minute items and more
Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31
• Residence hall events – can include dances or a carnival
• Tours of campus and Bloomington, book-buying trips, carnivals, dances, tournaments, scavenger hunts and more
• Student religious organizations fair, called FaithFest. Barbecues and more residence hall events
• IU vs. Western Kentucky home football game at noon Saturday
• Residence hall floor meetings with returning students
Glossary of Welcome Week events
Freshman Induction Ceremony: Incoming freshmen are officially inducted into the class of 2012, like a “reverse graduation,” said Melanie Payne, associate director of Orientation Programs. Parents and families can attend the short ceremony and a picnic will follow.
Culturefest: Event that celebrates IU’s many cultures, with free food, music and a main speaker
Traditions and Spirit of IU: Celebration learning about IU’s athletic and spirit traditions, including the fight song sung during basketball games.
Taste of the IMU: Indiana Memorial Union’s open house with free food from the Union and events showcasing what it offers.
Midnight Madness: Shopping event where buses shuttle students to Wal-Mart. Games and music greet them while they shop with student special prices. Free prizes are also given away.
Mall Madness: Not til Sept. 4, this early-evening event is similar to Midnight Madness but is at College Mall.
