On the most basic level, the sound of E For Explosion doesn’t deter too far from the sound Covington helped shape with JamisonParker; but that’s not a bad thing whatsoever. The album sees Covington breathily croon over songs that begin very quiet and eventually build to something a bit more. For the most part, Reinventing The Heartbeat is nothing more than album full of solid emo rock tracks, but it is put over the top by Covington’s intense emotion that saturates each cut.
The album’s title track ends up being the most accessible to those who are looking for more of the same from Covington. It perfectly sets up the sound of the record and gives the new band an identity with a gloomy pop feel. The track also allows Covington and his lyrics to seemingly open up about whatever issues he’s had in the past, which feel deeply personal: “I want to reinvent the heartbeat / Sleep with the suicide / I’m so lost in medication / I miss my butterflies.”
With “Unit 402,” E For Explosion deters from their recognizable sound a bit. The piano-driven track sees Covington provide a stronger vocal delivery that takes a few seconds to get used to, but ultimately works because he makes it very easy to get lost in his emotions. A tremendous string section instrumental powers the last 40 seconds of the track, again displaying something not quite expected.
With his new band Jamison Covington has reinvigorated his career while furthering his preferred style just enough. E For Explosion’s debut includes a lot of tracks that JamisonParker and pop music fans can enjoy.
