The Hudson-Holland Scholars Council honored women this month at an event to recognize the value all women have. \n“This event is to celebrate womanhood and to share special moments to acknowledge the great women in our lives,” said Adeyinka Kevin Okunade, vice president of the Hudson-Holland Scholars Council, a group that works to recruit and retain minority students at IU. \nThis year’s “Cater to Her: Women’s Appreciation” was the Hudson-Holland Scholars Council’s second annual event. The program is organized by the Hudson-Holland Scholar Council’s executive board at the beginning of every spring semester. A keynote speaker spoke, and attendees were quizzed on women’s history trivia questions. Rosalyn Wells, director of public relations for the Hudson-Holland Scholars Council, said the main reason for this event was to recognize and value all women. \nThe Willkie Formal Lounge was filled with tiny candles and pebbles, a piano, refreshments and envelopes and cards for attendees. The envelopes and cards were provided to thank a special woman in a person’s life. All the women at the event received a daisy as a sign of appreciation. Barbara Korth, clinical associate professor and coordinator for undergraduate multicultural education courses at IU, was a keynote speaker for the program. She talked about her and her daughter’s experiences as women and about the history of women. \n“People should really learn more about the lives of women around them to truly appreciate women’s role in history and today,” Korth said. \nWells said the Hudson-Holland Scholars Council hopes to continue this event to designate a special day every year for women to be appreciated for all of their hard work. She also said the executive board wants more people to attend and be aware of this celebration next year. \n“I think this is a great way to really take the time to recognize and be grateful for women, just for who we are,” Wells said.
