Stop preaching

Justin Hill’s column is a confused attempt to slap on a one-size-fits-all approach to sexuality. First of all, sex and sexuality are very different from pornography. Plenty of people indulge in sexual intercourse for the fun, healthy practice it is. It is a means of expression and release on both the physical and emotional planes. Pornography (just like bible-thumping crazies) is obsessing about something to extremes. Sex can have serious consequences when approached in an irresponsible fashion. It is hence necessary that people have access to information about sex and sexuality so that they can educate and empower themselves. I believe the Kinsey Institute is doing a great and important job of demystifying sex. The necessity to educate oneself about sex in no way equates to putting it off until marriage. You don’t suddenly become sexually literate when you get married. Abstinence is mostly a way of pretending that things will be all right as long as you wait until you are married. Banning or prohibiting sex engenders a forbidden fruit effect, which I suppose is right up the alley of the Christian leaders who Justin likes to quote. Frankly I would like non-condom-prescribing religions to stay out of my (and anyone else’s) sex life. The same goes for jokes about armpit hair in columns \nabout sexuality.
