Students have to pay to park in White Lot during games

The backs of parking tickets that cost someone $10 admission to park in the White Lot during men’s home basketball games read, “This ticket licenses the holder to park one automobile in this area.”\nStudents with E permits who want to park in the White Lot during a basketball game are subjected to paying the $10 admission fee, despite having the permit.\nJunior Tiffany Mason has an E permit, and said she thinks the system is wrong. \n“I feel that the money I pay for the E pass should suffice for those extra parking fees,” she said.\nThe Off-Campus Student Parking Guidelines distributed by IU Parking Operations promises students a lot to park in at any time.\n“The E parking spaces are located north of 17th Street in the Athletic Department parking lots,” according to the guidelines. “A vehicle bearing an E or F permit may also park in any non-24 hour space from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday.”\nDean of Students Dick McKaig acknowledged that students who own an E permit, which costs $120 for the school year, should be able to find on-campus parking, regardless of whether a student has season basketball tickets or not. He added that parking as a whole is a problem on campus.\n“We have to make a commitment to students finding a place to park,” he said. “It is certainly an issue.”\nHowever, Doug Porter, director of IU parking operations, said students should just find another free space to park in.\n“(E Permit holders) can wait until after the game starts to go park,” he said.\nPorter did say that the Athletic Department is in charge of hiring the people to handle the paid parking issues at the games.\nAssistant Athletic Director Kit Klingelhoffer said the spots are athletic spots only. \n“I don’t know the University’s policy, but we need those spots for game day,” he said.\nWhile Parking Operations and the Athletic Office don’t recognize a problem, McKaig said he sees that students should have their promise fulfilled. \n“I will be happy to make some calls,” he said.
