The combination of Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey can never be bad, right?
Wrong. So wrong.
In an attempt to deliver adventure meets romantic comedy, "Fool's Gold" doesn't deliver anything but a wish that you had those two hours of your life back.
Ben "Finn" Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is an adventurous treasure-hunter who, along with recent ex-wife Tess (Kate Hudson), spent two years of the marriage attempting to discover a treasure worth $500 million. Since Finn can't seem to "behave like a normal adult," he and Tess get divorced. Through a series of contrived events, Finn finds himself sharing a yacht with Tess and bazillionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), who agrees to pay for the search of the treasure after hearing the couple's tale. One clue leads to another and the trio, along with a bewildering slew of sidekicks, pursues the Spanish treasure, all while racing against another gang of treasure lovers.
Unfortunately, what's meant to be funny, adventurous and romantic is dumb, boring and unrealistic. Trying to combine romance with adventure simply didn't work. The far-fetched plot is filled with scenes out of a Disney Channel movie -- including Nigel's especially annoying teenage daughter Gemma (Alexis Dziena) who would have been best left out of the movie altogether. There's little to enjoy about "action scenes" such as Finn leaping in the water to rescue Gemma's hat, along with Finn and Tess magically learning how to fly an airplane to save the day.
It's difficult to care about the romance, since it's spattered bleakly throughout, and we all know (gasp!) how this one will end, so it's hard to be on the edge of your seat. In fact, just as the movie attempts to pick up the adventure towards the end (a glimpse of the "National Treasure"-type movie it attempted to pull off), an especially lame and cheesy ending concludes a movie most would be privileged to miss.
It seems the former "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" co-stars attempted to salvage a poorly written script. Both carry remnants of their former charm, but it's simply a shame it couldn't be put to better use, because even quality acting couldn't pull off what was clearly a bad idea to begin with.
The movie only gave me one laugh, boring action and ridiculous romance. The only highlight is a certain blonde's bulging muscles, available in several shirtless scenes.
Only fools should see this
