Administration, coach Sampson should take control

I was seated right in the middle of the embarrassing mob that was the student section Saturday afternoon, and like all other Hoosier fans, I was obviously anticipating a better showing from the team. They had a bad game. It was frustrating. It happens. My frustration, however, lay not only with the immaturity of the student section, but also with the entire University itself. It is my understanding that part of the reason the IDS spilled so much ink on the topic of the rowdy student section’s antics was due to a request by the administration. Why did they sit back? Why use IDS staff to give their message? And why the heck was nothing said at the game?\nI recall going to the annual Indiana/Purdue game, Senior Night, if I remember correctly, when I was about 10. Sitting in the balcony with my dad, I remember the students started the “bullshit” chant after a questionable call. During the next timeout, coach Knight went directly to the scorer’s table and scolded the crowd via microphone, reminding them in his intimidating \nfashion that IU has more class than what was being shown. There was absolutely nothing but positive cheers and chants coming from that side of Assembly Hall the rest of the night. I also personally do not see how coach Sampson can let chants like that happen. If I were him, I would be embarrassed for my team for having to represent a group of drunken idiots. My point is, if the administration, athletics department, you name it, wants to be viewed as classy, exemplary or what have you, they need to stop hiding behind student journalists or in the sea of cream and crimson at the games. If they have something to say, if they want to scold the students, they should be adults and just say it. And coach Sampson, it wouldn’t hurt to take the mic every now and again.
