USA Today editor to speak at Union

Journalist will focus on impact of First Amendment

Ken Paulson, longtime executive director of the First Amendment Center and editor of USA Today, will speak at Alumni Hall tonight. \nPaulson’s lecture is titled, “From Superman to Subpoenas: Why it’s now or never for America’s free press.” \n“He has had a lot of experience working with the First Amendment,” said Tim Street, assistant communications director at the IU School of Journalism, “and we look at this as a great opportunity for everyone, even non-journalism majors, to learn something.”\nPaulson was executive director of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University, editor of newspapers in five states and was on the team of journalists who founded USA Today in 1982. He was named editor of USA Today in 2004.\nSenior Matt Benoy said he thinks of USA Today as more of “entertainment news” rather than real news.\n“I hope that the rest of the students learn something from him, but I don’t think the USA Today is actual news,” he said.\nPaulson’s speech tonight will address the role of the media in today’s society and why journalists are as important as ever.\n“We’re definitely excited,” Street said. “Ken Paulson brings a lot of experience and knowledge.”
