Mathers to display new Afghanistan photographs

A new photography exhibit titled “Afghanistan: A Doctor Returns from Exile,” opens Friday at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, 416 N. Indiana Ave. The exhibit, which features the photographs of Pierluigi Rossi, documents the work of Dr. Arif Oryakhail and the Italian Cooperation, a program which organizes and funds humanitarian projects in developing countries. Rossi visited Afghanistan in 2006 and felt driven by a need to document the political and social situation of the country after five years of American and European military intervention, according to a press release for the event. A free opening reception for the exhibit will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Mathers Museum, which the public is invited to attend. The Mathers Museum is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. “Afghanistan: A Doctor Returns from Exile” will be on display until Dec. 21.
