An e-mail invites IU students to sign up at IUcareers.com for Oct. 4 interviews with the Defense Intelligence Agency.\nAccording to The Washington Post of Jan. 23, 2005, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld established the Strategic Support Branch as a new wing of DIA that reportedly conducts coercive interrogations. Funds for the unit were “reprogrammed” from other appropriations. The controversial head of SSB, Stephen Cambone, resigned abruptly, and the DIA of course strenuously denies that it engages in torture. This administration’s creativity in definitions is well-known. \nAs Philip Zimbardo’s book “The Lucifer Effect” unforgettably shows, people are not born torturers or sadists. Normal people become that in abnormal environments. To enter such an environment is to begin to surrender our most basic freedom. Though DIA claims to defend freedom against so-called evil doers, can we destroy our freedom to “save” it?
