8th floor of Willkie soaked by sprinkler system

James Brosher

A floor of Willkie Quad spent the weekend soaking after a sprinkler system was activated at about 3 a.m. Friday.\nAccording to an e-mail sent to Willkie residents, sprinklers were activated on the eighth floor of the South tower and a building-wide fire alarm went off. Residents were forced to evacuate, and the e-mail advised them to report cases of wet “ceiling tiles, wet carpet, black sludge coming down the shower wall” and other water damage upon returning to their rooms. Willkie staff did not mention compensation for destroyed personal items and Residential Programs and Services officials were not available for comment at press time.\nResidents of the affected floor were temporarily moved to Willkie’s center building. Other residents on dry floors donated blankets, food, air mattresses and sweatshirts, according to the e-mail. A Willkie Resident Assistant said Sunday that all residents had returned to their rooms.
