In an article in The New York Times (“Senate Democrats Plan a Resolution on Gonzales,” May 17) concerning the prospective resignation of Alberto Gonzales, Senator Arlen Specter had this to say:\n“I have a sense that when we finish our investigation, we may have the conclusion of the tenure of the attorney general,’’ Specter, (R-Penn.), said during a committee hearing. “I think when our investigation is concluded, it’ll be clear even to the attorney general and the president that we’re looking at a dysfunctional department which is vital to the national welfare.’’\nI would like to comment that this is the most oxymoronic statement I have heard from a senior congressional leader in a very long time.\nI would like to ask Senator Specter, what part of the current administration strikes him as fully functional. Show me “a department vital to the national welfare,” which has not come under scrutiny for either corruption or incompetence. Through a massive misstep after misstep, scandals, sheer incompetence, and – not to mention – an illegal war perpetrated only by shenanigans and incompetence, we are dealing with the most dysfunctional government this country has seen in a very long time, if ever.\nWhen families are dysfunctional, we have therapy or divorce. Maybe we need a therapeutic overhaul. But wait, we had one in the last election. That only leaves divorce, and that we will have in the next election. The only thing left is to protect our kids all over the world from this dysfunctional and abusive relationship and wait for next year.
DoJ not the only dysfunctional department
