Amy Winehouse: A-

Full bodied sound

Karly Tearney

Amy Winehouse recently won the 2007 Brit Award for Best British Female Artist and made history on the U.S. charts with the highest debut for a British female artist. If that's not enough to convince you of a true British invasion, two of her songs have been featured on the hit show "Grey's Anatomy," marking her arrival.\nShe describes her album's sound as a throwback to the girl groups of the '50s and '60s, but her looks are of another decade. Winehouse, a 23-year-old vamp with vintage pinup tattoos, harsh black eyeliner and a haunting glamour, has the sound of a sultry nightclub singer. Her voice is smoky and sensuous but doesn't have a sense of effort or forced emotion. Winehouse bridges the gap between classic and modern with a one-of-a-kind flavor.\nMy only complaint is that the album doesn't come as a 45; a record player with the subtle crackling sounds would be the only way to give Winehouse's sound a true aged feel. Your next best bet? Pop in a CD, dim the lights, curl up with a glass of merlot and relax with Back to Black.
