IU goes 6-0 during weekend road trip to Pennsylvania

Team improves to 14-12 on season and 6-0 in CWPA

IU coach Barry King and the IU women’s water polo team were confident they were going to be the best team in the pool for their six road contests throughout Pennsylvania this weekend. And the results certainly backed up their swagger heading into the weekend. \nThe Hoosiers went 6-0 on the weekend. IU now has a 14-12 record and is 6-0 in Collegiate Water Polo play.\nThe weekend started with a 9-7 triumph against Gannon. Senior center Melissa Soria tied her career high with five goals in the contest. Senior Emily Schmitt, junior Brooke Zimmerman and freshmen Kelly Palmberg and Nicole Sands also tallied goals in the match.\nSaturday, IU notched three wins in three games in dominating fashion, outscoring its opponents 45-7. The Hoosiers first defeated Mercyhurst 14-2, with Zimmerman getting the hat trick, with three goals. IU also was able to shut out Mercyhurst in the second half.\nIU next faced Penn State-Behrend and continued their momentum, quickly jumping to an 8-0 first quarter lead and never being challenged the rest of the way, winning by a score of 17-1. Six different Hoosiers scored two goals each while Zimmerman repeated her performance against Mercyhurst, hitting three goals. \nIn their final contest Saturday, the Hoosiers broke open the game by scoring five straight goals in the second quarter. Freshman attacker Rachel Edwards scored a career-high three goals in the game as IU finished the triple header with a 14-4 win.\nOn Sunday, it was a different day with the same results, as the Hoosiers beat Slippery Rock 16-9. IU had an 8-4 advantage at halftime and extended its lead to 13 heading into the final quarter.
